How to make SEO with PDF files

#SEOProsTribe

The new PDF index feature is here…!
But… what does it mean and how can you use it in a strategic way?

I will tell you  AND I can guarantee that you’ve never have thought about SEO in this way!

Where to find the feature

When you upload a pdf document to a button, you see this panel. Then you’re asked if you want to “Show this PDF in search results”.

But which kind of PDF do we want to be indexed in Google?

I will give you some examples:

PDF documents that should not be indexed:

Restaurants that have their menu on a PDF. When Google index the PDF people might find the old menu in Google and when they come and visit the restaurant, they expect another menu.
Hairdressers that have the prices on a PDF, when the prices are changed, the customers would maybe find the old prices which you obviously don’t wont.

PDF documents that should be indexed:

Briefly explained: Tutorials, user guides, manuals ect.
I’ve made an example with a coffee machine from Nespresso with a descaling user guide.

This is how it looks in Google Search Results:
I have search for “how to descale Nespresso coffee machine”.

When I go to the PDF it looks like this:

They have made a very user-friendly guide to descaling but when I search for how to descale, I am probably also in a situation where I have to buy descaling.

Now have to go back to google and search for descaling and here I might find a webshop that sells descaling cheaper than Nespresso itself.

BUT what if Nespresso have made their user guide like this?:

See the difference? Now we’ve added a direct link to shop.
I would probably be more likely to click on the link and directly go to the webshop where I can buy descaling and where I know the descaling fits my machine.

Upselling, upselling

Duplicated content in PDF and on your site…

When Google index the PDF the content in the PDF should be unique just as the content you have on your site. If you have the same content on your website as on the PDF google will Google will see it as duplicated content. So if you have a PDF you want to be indexed, remember to write new and unique content.

When you index, there is no way back!

As I mentioned earlier, you have to be sure when you’re indexing your PDFs. Right now, the PDF are placed on the domain wixstatic.com that means if you have indexed a PDF and afterwards want it to be removed, you have to delete it from your website and remove it from your trash.

Hope you’ll like it

Please feel free to ask any questions!

Hi Patrick, right now I am pretty sure it will show the wixstatic.com url, but this is only the start and hopefully we would be able to have the PDF on our own domain in the near future, which also will allow us to make 301 redirects on the PDFs and furthermore would it be nice to customize the Page title and Meta Description
@adam-fainaru can maybe assist me and this topic?
